Google has released its 2019 Frightgeist search results, showing the 100 most widely searched Halloween costumes, just in time for October 31 and trick-or-treating. The top 20 search terms for costumes people are looking for this year include the popular movie It, witch, dinosaur, Spider-Man, Descendants, clown, Fortnite, Chucky, 1980s, unicorn, rabbit, pirate, Stranger Things, mouse, Harley Quinn, superhero, Toy Story, princess, doll and mermaid.
Additional pop culture costumes making the list include Stranger Things (13), Harley Quinn (15), Toy Story (17), Princess Jasmine (31), Power Rangers (32), Batman (33), Beetlejuice (35), Star Wars (37), Wonder Woman (38), Minnie Mouse (41), Maleficent (42), Sheriff Woody (43), The Wizard of Oz (44), Minecraft (47), The Powerpuff Girls (48), Mickey Mouse (49), Buzz Lightyear (50), Hocus Pocus (52), Monsters, Inc. (53), Marshmello (54), Baby Shark (58), Pikachu (62), Winnie the Pooh (63), Tinker Bell (64), Moana (65), Paw Patrol (66), Elsa from Frozen (67), Poison Ivy (72), Scooby-Doo (73), Catwoman (77), Thor (79), Descendants (80), Cruella de Vil (85), Peppa Pig (86), Eleven from Stranger Things (88), Ghostbusters (89), The Incredibles (90), Belle from Beauty and the Beast (91), Grease (95), Captain America (97), Iron Man (98) and Dorothy Gale (99).
These results, pulled from the top 500 costume searches, used Google Trends to compile the list. Several popular costume searches are making repeat appearances from 2018 Frightgeist Fortnite, Spider-Man, unicorn, dinosaur and witch.
Paired with spooky music, the search engine list shows additional data, such as which cities were searching the most for these costumes, and allowing users to use Google’s Costume Wizard to come up with Halloween costume ideas for them.
Google offered additional 2019 Halloween costume search insights on its blog, where it revealed the top three most searched costumes for couples are Lilo and Stitch, Bonnie and Clyde and Cosmo and Wanda. The top three searched “good-for-groups” costumes were Descendants, Fortnite and Stranger Things. For the youngest Halloween revelers, the top three most searched baby costumes were banana, Dalmation and Grinch. On the pet costumes front, dog owners were all about celebrating Halloween with their canines, with the three most searched being Chucky dog costume, Ewok dog costume and Spider dog costume.
Google further broke down their costume search results by state, compiled by looking at the most popular costume search terms in September 2019. In California, Chucky was the most searched costume, while in New York, it was witch, in Hawaii, Fortnite, and in Wyoming the Mad Hatter. Mississippi is also about throwing it back to the decade of leg warmers and big hair; the 1980s were the most searched costume there. Alaska favored pirate costumes, while several states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Michigan, Missouri, North Dakota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Utah and West Virginia, were ready to cast some spells, with witch costumes being the most searched.
To give even more context to these costume searches, It costumes were most widely searched in Zanesville, Ohio, while clown costumes were most widely searched in St. Joseph, Missouri, and unicorns were most searched in Alpena, Michigan.
